Introduction	I am a Professor of Practice in Communication Studies. My research has focused on interpersonal and family communication in the context of health, with a particular focus on families navigating chronic and terminal illness. I am currently exploring intersection of empathy and communication.
Interests	I am currently the lead investigator for a study entitled Doctor and Patient Perceptions of Accommodation in the Medical Encounter: Implications for Patient-Centered Care. I am beginning a study that examines the communicative processes surrounding chronically ill patient's sense-making about their illness. I am also interested in studying the communicative processes between healthcare providers that contribute to the stigma associated with patients who are labeled non-compliant and the impact this has on the quality of patient care. Still another area of interest is exploring the communicative processes through which choice in healthcare decision-making is homogenized across populations and how this impacts the allocation of healthcare resources.
