About me

Location Memphis, TN, United States
Introduction SEE MY NEW BLOG AT www.kristeniversen.com as of May 2011. I am a writer and teacher of creative nonfiction and fiction. My first book, Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth , won the Colorado Book Award and led to work with A&E Biography and The History Channel. My textbook, Shadow Boxing: Art and Craft in Creative Nonfiction, was the first to cover the major subgenres of creative nonfiction. My forthcoming book, Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats (Crown 2012), chronicles my experiences with Rocky Flats, a highly controversial government facility near Denver, Colorado that secretly produced the heart of every nuclear bomb in the U.S. and - unbeknownst to residents - resulted in radioactive contamination of nearby communities. I teach at The University of Memphis, where I direct the MFA program in creative writing and am Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning literary journal THE PINCH (www.thepinchjournal.com. I also teach in the low-res MFA program at the University of New Orleans, held in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Edinburgh, Scotland. Visit my website at www.kristeniversen.com.
