| Introduction | mother, wife, lover of beauty, metalsmith, student of enamelling~~ a born-and-bred new englander with an ancestor on the mayflower and withdrawal pains from the lack of antique stores here, I now reside on the tropical island of st john. half of the living room is devoted to my metalworking studio (to my son’s dismay!), with hammers and steel blocks sharing space with my beachcomber finds--fragments of shell and urchin, pods and seaworn wood. i am also teaching my teenage son goldsmithing techniques--he is my apprentice, a talented metalsmith in his own right. the island of st john provides no shortage of inspiration in the beachworn detritus that I collect from its shores and incorporate into the silver, copper and bronze metalwork that I fabricate; although of late i've been hunkered down at my bench constructing automaton jewelry--mechanical marvels to delight, amaze and inspire :) |
