He contributes to The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, Zoetrope: All Story, The Times Literary Supplement, Nikkei, Yomiuri, New Statesmen and more, and he is a primary source on Japan for CNN, CBS, the BBC and NHK. He is a columnist for The Japan Times and a professor at Waseda University in Tokyo.
