| Introduction | Thomas Hirschhorn, a Swiss artist born in Bern, Switzerland in 1957, was the adopted son of an accountant and homemaker. Later Hirschhorn would attend five years at a school for graphic design. The school was a “Bauhaus-type” (contemporary German architecture) educational institution in Zurich, Switzerland. Surprisingly, the school had no art department available, but at the time that didn’t matter to Hirschhorn because he was driven to be a graphic designer. He said, “Not for hire, but my own kind of graphic designer.” After schooling, Thomas moved to Paris, France in the middle of the 1980’s. He was inspired to travel there to study at the Grapus Workshop. At this point Hirschhorn started supporting himself as a house painter, moving company laborer, and provided health aide to the elderly. Hirschhorn started to identify himself through introducing his graphic designs to the format of a collage. It was now that Thomas Hirschhorn’s career started to blossom into a great contributor to the works that have made up installation art in the past two decades. |
