| Introduction | I am a middle-age housewife. Unfortunately, we have a rare, mystery and horrible genetic disease happened in my mother-side family. This disease is called Mitochondrial Encephalopathy Lactic Acidosis and Stroke, MELAS for short form, it is a kind of mitochondria-disorder diseases.It affects the entire body. My daughter passed away with this MELAS in 2002 at the age of 14, my younger brother passed away with the same disease last December (2006), my son also have this disease, but the symptoms (I hope,never) developed. This genetic disease is passed by the mother to the child via mtDNA, of course, I have this disease. In the meantime, I am a long-term disabled, I have diabetes, osteoporosis, muscle-weakness, muscle-pain, poor vision and I am a deaf. Actually, I am struggling with this genetic disease everyday. I never know when will this MELAS cause my life. I am a Chinese-Canadian, I was a little girl when I immigrated to Canada 35 years ago.
