About me

IntroductionJohn Matel joined the Foreign Service in 1984 and has served in Brazil, Norway, Poland & Iraq. His most recent posting was as leader of a provincial reconstruction team embedded with the Marine Combat Regiments in Western Al Anbar province, Iraq. He currently directs the policy office at the International Information Programs at the Department of State in Washington and next year will take up duties as counselor for public affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Brazil. In addition to his FS work, John Matel owns and manages commercial forest land in Brunswick Co, Virginia and is communications director for the Virginia division of the American Tree Farm System, the world’s oldest sustainable forestry organization. John Matel graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a master’s degree in ancient history (classical Greek) and has an MBA from the University of Minnesota. He was also State Department Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University.
