| Introduction | David was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He joined his father's Insurance Brokerage in 1962 and spent the following year as a junior broker at Lloyd's in London. Called up for Military service in 1965 he spent 3 years as a Gunner Officer in the Royal NZ Artillery. Demobilised after a year on active service in South Vietnam, David returned to business as a sharebroker. On marrying a foreign service officer in 1973, David's unquenched wanderlust encouraged him to follow her star on postings to Singapore, Suva, Ottawa, Los Angeles, Canberra and a further, final stint in Ottawa. He occupied himself with Yacht Broking, selling sails and rigs for Hood and Yachtspars, and tinkering with Real Estate. David has enjoyed a lifelong interest in sailing - racing inshore and offshore, and cruising and was for several years deeply involved in Sailing administration. He was Vice Commodore of both the Royal Port Nicholson and Royal Suva Yacht Clubs. David has been an occasional columnist, writing and blogging on veterans affairs, sailing and maritime matters, travel, and much more.
