Introduction Tamar Mag Raine was a full-term baby, but had RH-negative blood type. This caused her to get a bilirubin count that was sky high. She was so sick that some bile got into her bloodstream and clogged up her brain stem, resulting in an extremely sick infancy. Her parents were not sure she could see or hear until she was six months old. At one year of age, Mag was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy by Dr. Myles Perlstein. Her family left the east coast for California when she was three years old so that she could attend head start for handicapped children. Watching her parents fight for everything she needed, she learned how to advocate for herself and then was able to mentor others in becoming self-advocates. Tamar Mag has been writing since she was almost ten years old. She has written well over 1,000 poems. She will be sharing some of them here on her blog. Her most recent volunteer job was sitting on the Oakland Mayor's Commission on Persons with disabilities. She served two terms over six years, and is proud of what the MCPD accomplishes in making the City of Oakland a model in terms of its accessibility for people with disabilities.
