| Introduction | Once a lawyer, once a union organizer, once a new-car salesman, a UPS sorter, a bartender, and a produce hustler at Chicago's South Water Market, I am now a social worker, on and off. I have degrees without any distinction from Cornell University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Chicago. I am also somewhat more proudly a graduate of Braeside Elementary School in Highland Park, Illinois, where I was taught to write book reviews of the sort I shall write again in this blog. And reviews of other things, too. I am not the real Uncle Dave. I'm just stealing his name. Uncle Dave, a poet and a Special Forces veteran of the Vietnam war, had a room at the Magic Theatre, a Cornell student co-op where I also lived in 1972 and 1973. I learned much from Dave and my other housemates back then. There's truth in Bob Dylan's Dream. |
