| Introduction | At the urging of my Dean, I decided to put some of my daily journal musings "out there." I've been keeping a daily journal for about 20+ years. Sometimes I write about educational ideas but most of the time my topics are more personal. I don't profess to any profundity regarding these blogs. Usually, I find blogs self-serving. What I'm trying to do with these entries, though, is to guide young professors through the minefields of higher education. Maybe you'll find something helpful. I hope so. |
| Interests | Teaching, writing, ocean racing sailing, cross-country ski marathoning, snowboarding, rowing, sea kayaking, traveling, and reading. |
| Favorite movies | I pretty much hate movies. The time invested in watching most doesn't justify the payoff in learning or entertainment. |
| Favorite music | Basically everything except hip-hop. I guess that covers everything from Mozart to Jay-Z. I like some of Lady Ga-Ga. Adele is good. Let's rule out Lawrence Welk or polka music. |
| Favorite books | Mostly history. My father was a D-Day veteran so I try to read a lot about WWII. Political books are OK but depressing. Stephen Ambrose is one of my favorite historians. I was about to go to Vietnam when I got an unexpected deferment. I figured it saved my life, so I read a lot about VN. I also enjoy reading about human behavior and relationships. My most recent reads include: On China by Henry Kissinger, The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, and In the Garden of the Beasts by Erik Larson. |
