Introduction | The designer and creator of MOS Atelier handbags & leathergoods, Marc Owen Schreiner, hails from a long heritage of blacksmiths and woodworkers. Growing up in the upper Mississippi River Valley, Marc (the son of a multi-disciplined artisan father), quickly developed an appreciation for the uniqueness of an elegant, hand-wrought object. His father’s workshop was stocked with beautiful antique tools of many trades; the surname “Schreiner” is a medieval German trade name indicating the mastery of the cabinetmaker. |
Interests | Art, Design, Cycling, Motorcycling, Opera, Tango |
Favorite Movies | “Heirloom quality and overbuilt to last” MOS Atelier creations are crafted one at a time by hand utilizing old world techniques. Every component of Marc’s designs is a well thought out process. Starting with the vegetable tanned leather (that are cured in a liquor made from water and various tree barks), which is then hand dyed and burnished in house, imparting a luxe character and luster. The bags are meticulously manually sewn using a stitching awl and two harness needles, which lends each piece its fine organic appearance and superior wear characteristics. Special attention is given to each piece’s hardware, often carved from exotic and domestic hardwoods. These woods are carefully selected and French polished to accentuate grain patterns that approach a jewel-like beauty. Alternatively, he may decide upon a more whimsical metal design fabricated from aircraft grade aluminum billet. This material has an amazing strength to weight ratio, can be polished to a mirror finish, and forged into latches which open and close with a satisfying precision. In a world of short-term conveniences, Marc Schreiner’s fine leathergoods are anything but disposable and have the possibility to last for several generations. |
Favorite Music | Recently featured in the LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton short film & exhibition, “The Art of Craftsmanship Revisited New York”, Marc’s handcrafted leather goods received critical acclaim for their artisan tradition and craftsmanship. The MOS Atelier line includes men & woman’s accessories as well as personal leathergoods, and retro-styled bicycles with custom leather accessories, all with Marc’s signature attention to details. |
Favorite Books | A Brooklyn, New York resident, Marc divides his time between his Operatic performances and custom craftwork. As a lyric Tenor, he has performed leading roles with many esteemed companies both in the USA & Europe. He is currently working on a series of sushi inspired wood and leather cases and purses. |
