| Introduction | I work in environmental education and conservation in the North of England. However, I grew up way down south where there are no red squirrels - the species I now work to protect. I feel sad and often frustrated with the way humans have become so casual about the natural world - as though it will always be there when we need it - for resources, holidays or somewhere to move to when we have kids and want to get out of the cities. Still we build more houses, while many buildings in towns are empty. I grew up in rural Cambridgeshire and the country is where my heart is. The cities are great, but we need to ensure we keep a balance and not let the sprawl dominate. That's why I do what I do. |
