Introduction	I have been working on old houses for more than 40 years, and am particularly interested in the implications of the technology used by American builders before and after the early 1800s, and the ways in which the early industrial revolution changed architectural design. My research currently includes the pattern books of Asher Benjamin, the use of geometric proportions and the golden mean in early design, and the way design norms changed with the introduction of forged steel tools. I live with my extended family on a 215 year old farm, and my office is in a shed attached to the hay barn.
