When my science teacher smashed a frozen rose with a hammer, I did not warm the petals to bring them back to life. They were in little, glittering pieces scattered across the classroom. I watched him clean up the mess - gawky and blushing all the while - and went about my merry way. I never thought of the rose again, even though the fragments were a very pretty, icy red color.
