| Introduction | Charlie was born June 17, 2004: 8 lbs 13 oz., 21 inches long and was a perfect, healthy little baby. On January 3, 2006, however, he was diagnosed with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia and was admitted to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, TN. He went through five rounds of chemotherapy ending in June of 2006. After almost seven full months in the hospital he was released in July 2006 and was a happy, healthy 2-year-old. On December 28, 2006 Charlie relapsed and was readmitted to inpatient care. He went through another difficult chemotherapy regimen to prepare him for a bone marrow transplant. On March 16, he received a bone marrow transplant from an anonymous, matched donor through a national registry. All was going to plan until he got severe graft-versus-host disease that did not respond to steroids. He was admitted back to the hospital and spent two more months in the hospital trying to fight. Charlie passed away on June 28, 2007. He had just turned 3 years old. |
