Introduction I've spent most of my life trying to make whole wheat rise. And I don't just mean bread. The concept of making whole wheat rise is my benchmark philosophy for any undertaking of which others might say, "It can't be done." As a teen in the mid-1970's, I was determined to make a loaf of bread that fulfilled the baker's tenets of good crumb, crust, rise, texture, and taste. But I insisted my bread also be healthful and uncompromised by white flour. People insisted I could not possibly make a loaf of bread without using some white flour "to give it rise." To make a very long story short, I succeeded -- and finished college, pursued a career in journalism, and raised three children while trying. Now I'm determined to use that philosophy to write my first book. For me, these two seemingly divergent endeavors have always gone "hand in hand." When faced with a formidable task, I say, "Hey, if I could make whole wheat rise . . . “ This blog records my efforts to write my first book now that the children are mostly grown and I have time to think about this unknown thing I want to do . . . my book . . . but most of all about the things I learn while getting there.
