Introduction	My dad worked on the Rio Grande Western Railroad for forty years, and when I was a young boy I spent a lot of time at the depot where he worked and therefore, grew to love trains. Dad used to work on the "Extra Gang" where he supervised a crew of men that repaired the ties and rails on the tracks. The "Gandy Dancer" was a steel rod that was used as a lever to pry up the tracks to move the rails. The crew of men worked so much in unison as they worked on the rail & tie removal that they appeared to be dancing. Thus the name came about, "Gandy Dancer."
