| Introduction | Celia Cortez is an artist based out of Fort Worth, Texas. She grew up in the northside area graduating from North Side High school, continued her education at TCC Northweat Campus where she found her passion for painting. Celia transferred to the University of Texas at Arlington in 2009 to pursue studio art in painting and completed her degree in 2012. The artist is currently creating a body of work using mixed media marterials, found objects, and acrylic mediums which explores how the application of these materials affects different sufaces. Rather than displaying some of these pieces two dimensionally, they are removed from the wall so they can be viewed from both sides. Additionally, she is working on a series of works using a rubber duck as the subject of serious, real life situations. The personification of the plastic toy lends a sense of levity to what would otherwise be an unsettling scene. Cortez has had a solo exhibition at the Rose Marine Theater Gallery and was selected to be in Artspace111's second annual juried show. In her senior year she was one of four and the only undergraduate to receive the James S. Barnett Jr. award based on her current work using mixed media. |
