About me

Gender Female
Occupation Writer, sometime painter, friend to animals, candle-crafter & organic home products designer
Location Cleveland, Ohio, United States
Introduction My name is Jill, in case the username didn't tip you off. I am 35, and live in Cleveland, Ohio. And that is enough about ME! I know Deb through her daughter, Charity, who was my freshman roommate at Taylor U. I haven't seen Deb since Hal & Char's wedding, but I am deeply interested in, concerned about, saddened and moved by Deb's battle with cancer. Charity has been a dear friend for over 15 years, and an inspiration to me. I would not be who I am today without knowing Char, and Char would not be the amazing woman she is without the dynamic influence of her inimitable and fantastic mother, Deb.
Interests MOVIES & MUSIC (and some days, music and THEN movies) Cats, my family, exotic cooking, writing, grammatical accuracy, candle-making, organic home & body products development, the outdoors, water, solitude, eccentric friends, dry humor. For the record, there were commas included in the aforementioned list when I initially entered it. JUST so you know (which is a fragment sentence.)
Favorite Movies Despite his unsettling personal life choices, I admire Woody Allen as a filmmaker. I also enjoy the work of Pedro Almodovar, Cameron Crowe, David Lynch, Terry Gilliam and many other directors. My life has always revolved in many ways around movies, and I love too many titles to list. Generally speaking, I enjoy intricate or ironic plots, with characters who are gifted, challenged, conflicted, sometimes disturbed, inspirational, bold and insightful. As a rule, I steer clear of Hollywood blockbusters, although I do thoroughly enjoy a good laugh (bring on the Steve Carell!)I like biopics, and admittedly I do tend to like tragedies, but I also love a good "triumph of the human spirit" flick, like Shine, Wit, or My Left Foot, for example. I am looking forward to seeing Michael Moore's "Sicko, " and "Evening, " from the writer of The Hours. Is that enough, yet? I could go on all day! :)
Favorite Music Music and film are two of my greatest loves (cats, and just about all living things are also included therein.) I was a teen in the 80's, so I love almost anything under the New Wave category. These days, I (still!) listen to Robyn Hitchcock, REM, Suzanne Vega, PJ Harvey, Bob Mould, Nick Drake, Red House Painters (now, Sun Kil Moon), Over the Rhine, The Innocence Mission. My moods vary wildly from week to week, so sometimes I want to scream along with Ian McKaye and Fugazi, and other times, I want a quiet moment alone with Mahler's 5th, or Gorecki's 3rd. Sometimes I like to pretend I'm 21 and listen to an old Coldplay tune; other times, I'd rather just unwind with a great movie score by one of my favorites, Thomas Newman. Deb and I are completely on the same page in our love of movie soundtracks. Go, Deb! You rule! :)
Favorite Books Although I write regularly, and have written a LOT, I actually don't really read very much. That is my own personal wacky paradox. The last book I (re-)read, was an old favorite, The Catcher in the Rye, which inspired me to write my first novel in 1992. I am currently reading The English Patient by Michael Ontaadji (whose name always confuses me)I love the film, and have memorized each line of dialogue, so I thought it would be a propos to read the book, which is surprisinly dissimilar to the film (I am around page 160 of 300-some.)I am a bit childlike (and possibly obsessive?)in my ability to derive pleasure from repeated exposure to the same things that I love. I don't usually read books more than two or three times, tops, but I have been known to watch my favorite films as many as 100 times. What can I say, I'm a bit unsual that way.

My "random question" is: Why do I love cheese so much when it gives me such gas?
