Introduction Mild-mannered teacher by day, irrationally keen gardener by night. I knew I chose my career wisely because it's the only one where I get two months off to play in the dirt! I garden in Zone 4b or 5a, and have many areas of my yard in which to play. The front yard is now nearly all shrubs, ornamental grasses and a small rock garden, having given up on trying to grow grass on this hot and dry SW exposure. The back yard has the raised beds for veggies, some mixed borders and a wild area where I toss in plants, bulbs and seeds willy-nilly. I never met a plant I didn't like, so this is a real playground for me, a bit of unwanted urban turf, where I can experiment without worrying so much about how it looks. I"ve been gardening for 12 years at this house, and if there is a constant theme to my efforts, it's change. The house itself underwent a huge transformation in 2006 and there have been big changes to the entire property. Most notable is that we are now grass-free. I'm a fairly disorganized gardener, and it's really nothing more than my whims which lead me into various outdoor projects. Some are successful, some aren't, but it's my exercise, meditation, and creative outlet.
