| Introduction | A close reading of selected speculative fiction by such authors as Octavia Butler, Jewel Gomez, Nalo Hopkinson, and Samuel Delany: writers that offer alternative world views challenging the society we have become accustomed to. Science Fiction resonates for those dissatisfied with the status quo, such as dreamers, escapists, and the powerless on all levels. In our exploration, we will study, discuss and write about: 1) how Black writers use the genre to challenge stereotypical imagery of Black people; 2) how it addresses historical and contemporary experiences, and confronts issues regarding class, gender, race, and sexuality; and 3) how it offers a future ripe with opportunity and possibility.
