| Introduction | Compass is a collaborative project between two London based artists, Petra Stenvall and Anja Henckel; a platform to open up creative discourse. The meaning of compass spans themes of power relations as well as having geographical connotations. Both a noun and verb, definitions of the term include an area in which something acts, operates or controls. It can be to surround, encircle, reach or stretch, understand or grasp, scheme or plot, form a curved configuration, bound and extend. It is also to achieve, attain or accomplish. ‘Hall’s Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art’ lists the compass as an attribute of Astronomy, Geometry, Euclid, Justice, Maturity, Melancholy and Prudence. Art historically, when held by a sitter within a portrait, this object identifies him as an architect or navigator, it may also denote an artist. Reworking this expanded notion of the compass, this collaboration explores ideas of tracing and mapping collective memory, working in dialogue across a wide range of media including photography, moving image and sculpture. |
