| Introduction | Politically I would describe myself as liberal; I cannot say I am strongly aligned with one political party, although I often do vote straight ticket Democratic Party. Very few Americans can be summed up politically by being labeled as either a Republican or a Democrat, and yet this is the two party system we find ourselves navigating, negotiating for our rights. There are of course other parties, Libertarian, Green, the latest, "Tea Party", but these groups do not yet have the political influence (power) to expand this two party system America is so attached to. Maybe it's our lack of focus that keeps us hooked on this oversimplified world view? Or is it that the underpinnings of this system are so complex and deep-rooted that change is nearly impossible to effect? The questions I would like to explore for myself during this government course revolve around ideas of balancing personal freedoms with the safety, rights, and well being of the collective whole through the U.S. political system. |
