About me

Occupation journalist
Introduction I am chair of the print and digital news faculty at MU and executive editor for innovation at the Columbia Missourian. For 15 years I worked for The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot as a copy editor, designer, wire editor, city hall reporter, metro editor and more. While there I helped create principles and daily practices for the then-fledgling concept of public journalism. I was deputy managing editor for local news. My last gig there was overseeing fiscal fortunes as the North Carolina general manager. I graduated from Missouri in 1985 with bachelor's degrees in journalism and sociology. With co-author Cheryl Gibbs, I wrote "Getting the Whole Story: Reporting and Writing the News."
