| Introduction | Lindsay and I used to have proper jobs in London. But that was so last millennium! So at the end of 1999 we changed tack completely and went to run ski chalets for 4 winters. A search for something to do in the summers brought us to Provence and then Rognonas where, in 2002, we established Maison d'Etre Holidays, with the idea of offering gite-based holidays with a range of additional services. (Gite is the French word for rural self-catered holiday accommodation.) To start we ran the business from the Mas (this time a Provencal word - farmhouse) of some friends. In January 2004 we bought our own Mas and began renovating. After an intense period of hardcore DIY, we opened our first Gite at the end of June. And in the years since, we have added another gite, developed our own apartment by converting the hayloft, and changed an old potato field into a 2 acre garden with swimming pool. The conclusion is that we like it here. We may not be as affluent as we were in London, but the lifestyle gains far outstrip the losses. We're glad we changed. |
