IntroductionBlack Girl in Erbil is a flâneuse determined not to “die an unlived life”. She is one of many expats living and working in Iraqi Kurdistan. She chronicles her experiences navigating myriad paths through culture, religion society and life. Though she identifies herself simply by the name in her passport- and to some extent the nationality embossed on it, certain experiences are unique to a woman of colour. Her academic background in International Relations informed her graduate studies in Art History. Upon completing her thesis on Middle Eastern contemporary art and gaining experience in arts management and cultural administration, it was time to relocate closer to her field of interest. From there she observes developments in art markets, cultural initiatives and creative communities in the region. All the while musing on observations on her day-to-day life in Erbil. Inspiration for the blog title came from the lyrical novel, Black Girl in Paris by Shay Youngblood. At the centre of the story is a fearless young woman who declared in the opening lines, “I’m not afraid of anything.”
