Introduction | I am both a practising Karateka and Iaidoka. My level in each remains insufficient therefore I continually strive to reach higher development and understanding in my chosen Japanese Martial Arts. I commenced karate training in 1968 under the auspices of the Vancouver JKA dojo of Yamashiro Hiroo sensei. In 1970 many of the dojo seniors migrated to the new dojo in town, that of Narumi Hidetada shihan. I am proud that I can still call him 'my sensei' even today. My karate journey has at times been rocky, certainly it has not been a smooth ride. I am fortunate in that I can also count senseis Nishiyama HIdetaka, Abe Keigo and Yahara Mikio as my instructors. My roots however remain with Narumi sensei, but my eyes and mind are always open to learning. Due to serious debilitating health issues intense karate keiko is no longer available to me. I have to take a much softer and calmer approach! As a result I commenced Iaido practice in March 2009. Gentler perhaps, but certainly no less intense! Iaido has been a wonderful supplement to my Budo journey, and one that has opened my eyes and levels of understanding in so many ways. |
