Location Hercules, CA, United States
Introduction I teach in West Contra Costa Unified, a mostly urban school district, the third largest in the San Francisco Bay area. Hercules Middle High School, where I teach, has about 1700 students, who come from a working class and middle class population--townhouses and single family homes--upwardly mobile, first-time property owners. Hercules is an American Dream town. In school, as in town, there is no ethnic majority, only smaller and larger minorities from all corners of the country and ultimately, the globe. I teach college preparatory as well as advanced placement English. Ever since my school district started sending 10th and 11th graders to the Ivy League Connection, my students have been among those that have attended. WCCUSD's Ivy League Connection is a unique program. We are the only school district in the nation to pay for our most excellent and deserving students to study during the summer at a number of Ivy League universities, taking district teachers and administrators with them as chaperons. This year, I am off to Yale with two of my students and two more students from two other high schools.
