| Introduction | JP Berger is the name. I’ve been an art director and graphic designer since before Apple was a twinkle in Steve Job’s eye. I remember when the little 1-MHz fellas first arrived and thinking how cute they were if not a bit gimmicky for me. My weapon of choice was the knife and an X-acto in those days packed more processing power than a PC. Life was easier without computers for guys like me. All you needed to do was knock out a few scribbles a day, hand them to what’s-his-name behind the keyboard and get down to the bar for some quality creative time. It turns out that the strategy of giving the geeks a 15 year headstart before joining the digital race may not have been the wisest. And although I might be getting on, I’m not old enough to retire. So all I can do is what old guys do best, reminisce about the past, drone on about different ways to do the job and share my knowledge on totally irrelevant subjects. It’s a job I’m qualified for. I’ve been around, worked in New York, London, Chicago, won a few awards, and seen a lot of communications, design, illustration, photo shoots, artwork and print production along the way. Someone’s got to go on about it and it might as well be me. |
