| Introduction | In 1978 Mazie Meade was diagnosed with lymphoma and breast cancer. She was given six months to live. Not accepting that expiration date, she spent the next ten years learning about opportunities to improve and lengthen her life. Mazie visited numerous places and programs focussed on "wellness" and benefits to cancer patients. This included a visit to the Wellness Community in Santa Monica, CA. Mazie saw what she knew Yakima needed - a safe, comfortable place where individuals diagnosed with cancer could come together for support, information and hope. Ten years after her diagnosis, 1988, Mazie and a group of good friends started Wellness House. Now, 20 years later, Wellness House maintains Mazie's dream - a safe and comfortable place for individuals diagnosed with cancer and other life-challenging illnesses, as well as for their family members and friends. Additional support program added over the years include chronic pain, fibromyalgia, hepatitis C and depression, as well as those faced with the loss of a loved one. Today, Mazie's dream remains: knowledge, support and giving hope. |
