| Introduction | I am a professor of communications and head of the Department of Journalism at Penn State University. I teach mass media history at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I am the author of Civil War Journalism (Praeger, 2012) and Abolition and the Press: The Moral Struggle Against Slavery (Northwestern University Press, 2008). Before teaching, I spent more than 10 years as a newspaper reporter and freelance writer. |
