IntroductionMark Twain offered a simple, yet profound, statement regarding education. Twain once stated “Education consists mainly of what we have unlearned”. His statement also sums up my philosophy. I believe that because our world constantly evolves, people need to learn new ways to live in the present time. Our environment gives us many rich opportunities that require people to make daily choices. The process of removing ignorance is, as Twain pointed out, “unlearning”, what we have learned in the past. When students “unlearn”, they must problem solve and reflect and learn how to negotiate past knowledge with present day truths. Education, therefore, is the key to a better existence for human beings. The environment provides the context for lifelong exploration, giving individuals many options. I continually strive to learn something new. I try to journey through my educational experience in an unattached manner. In other words, I am willing to be changed. I also attempt to inspire this stance in my students.
