IntroductionEvery poet commits a crime. The abscence of a poem is emptiness in a poet, an erasure a longing that waits to be cuffed. It lies like a sleeping formless vagrant interrupting the vastness. Every poet knows the putting of words. To push, to cudgel, to chase them together, until suddenly a door opens, and something cold and fresh rubs across the room, and the emptiness has changed. ------------- It happens in the mind. The critics credit your stumbling with imagination. And they may be right. The grammar of color is like that... how to parse hues and shapes into the heat of dialogue...how to strip color of its lethargy and let it speak. How to commute such a sentence in the prison of loving a life (as best you can). There is nothing exact or pristine about any of this--- this celibacy of creative waiting. This welling up, this inflammation. An almost ribald reverence for inquisition and where it takes you. The blank footsteps insatiable as quick-sand.
