| Introduction | My journey with the Grateful Dead began, essentially, the day I was born. My father is a Deadhead. His first show was 4/2/73 at the Boston Garden, and his attendance continued through the 90's. He brought me to my first concert, also at the Boston Garden, on September 25, 1991. I was nine, and I knew the band. I knew who Jerry was (and even had the mind to tell myself at nine that "I am seeing Jerry Garcia. That is him right there." I knew Bob, wanted to know what Phil sounded like, and thought Iko Iko was cool. That night's opening notes to Help On The Way was the loudest sound I'd ever heard. Louder even than the ferryboat horn I was so afraid of on my yearly family vacation! It was an experience, but it ended there... Until college. They always say college is for experimentation. Some choose drink or drugs. My mode of experimentation was music. I listened to a lot of genres as suggested by friends. My father referred me to some Dead, which I continued to go back to. By sophomore year, I was hooked, and began collecting. |
