Introduction Ghost signs, also called fading ads or bickads, are aging signs that were painted on brick or wood walls during the golden age of the industrial revolution (late 1800s - early 1900s). These signs were were a popular promotion tool, as billboards are today, and were mostly used to promote businesses or products from the area. However, contrary to the ads on billboards, these signs were a much more permanent fixture of the wall they occupied on which is one of the reasons their popularity diminished over time. Painted on by contracted "wall dogs", each one of these signs tells a story about what happened in and around their location. Mtl Ghost Signs revisits that past to breathe new life into the fading stories behind these original advertisements.
