| Introduction | History: Northern State University has been a part of the Aberdeen community since 1902. In 1947, the school published the first edition of Northern Lights. This was a collection of poems and short stories written by Northern Students. This first edition was sponsored by Xi Gamma, the local Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. The editors dedicated the publication to the returning World War II veterans. The journal was published annually as Northern Lights until 1988, when the title was changed to Shelterbelt. In 2002, funding for Shelterbelt was cut and the English Club began sponsoring the journal. In order to keep the spirit alive and bring the publication into the 21st Century, the journal was moved online in 2006 and reclaimed the title Northern Lights.
