| Introduction | Deniz Buga was born in 1982 in Istanbul. He studied in the fields of Sociology, History and Cinema in Bosphorus University in Istanbul. As a committed member of the Cinemateque in this university, he wrote film articles for national magazines, worked in film sets and finally shot his first short films: Brothers (2003) and Sleep (2005) both received best short film awards in Turkey and made their screenings in Oberhausen and later in more than 20 international film festivals. Along with partners, he founded Studio 4 Istanbul, an independent production company, thus getting actively involved in the Turkish independent film scene. In 2006, he was accepted into MFA Film Production Program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and moved to New York where he specialized in writing, directing and cinematography. His last short film Wednesdays (2008) had its premiere in San Sebastian Film Festival and received Special Mention by the Jury. Starting in Jan 2011, Deniz Buga will be a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam. |
