| Introduction | My husband and I have 15 grown up children--thus the momentous significance of my "empty nest," and how I have filled some of my time with my "new baby." This book had its beginnings as a seminary Church History project in high school. It won first place, but I was discerning enough to recognize it as a very unskilled effort, especially after it had "cooled." I was embarrassed to learn that Brother Allen had read it to all the younger classes. I kept thinking of ways to improve it, and did research on customs and lifestyles of that period. When I became a busy mom, that pastime was more or less set aside as I put my efforts into parenting and church callings. When I could call more of my spare time my own, I got serious about polishing up the manuscript and fulfilling the dream of producing a published book.
