| Introduction | In 2001, my husband, Kent, and I hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Dalton, Massachusetts. We were on our way to Katahdin, but had a family emergency that forced us to get off the Trail. Since then I've become involved with the A.T. Museum Society, a group that is trying to start a museum about the Appalachian Trail. This past year I have served as the director or a grant-supported project to barcode, scan and archivally house the collection of thru-hiker Polaroids at the A.T. Conservancy's Visitor Center in Harpers Ferry, in preparation for the development of a social networking website centered around these photos. I'm starting research on another project - this time to create a traveling exhibition about thru-hiker culture with the Mathers Museum of World Cultures at Indiana University (where I work) and the A.T. Museum. If things go as plan, the exhibition will open March 2011 at the Mathers. Every now and then I try to get home to French Lick! |
