Introduction I was born on August 9th 1893 in Whitley County. I came to Hazard in 1922 where I was engaged to teach at the Hazard Baptist Institute. For two years, I taught the sixth grade and High School Science. Upon the insistence of my sister, Rachel Tye Baker, I left HBI and joined her in the Hazard Poultry and Supply Company. In 1932, I left my sister's business and took over Dale's Grocery on Main Street in Hazard. I opened Johnson's Department Store in the same spot in 1934. The Hazard High School band performed at the opening ceremonies. Among the members of the band that day were Dick Goodlette and Sam Powell Jr. I first met J. O. Harper when he came to Hazard in 1932. He was a salesman with the Maury Coal Company and later worked for the Stratton and Terstagge Company. We were married in 1938 and Mr. Harper joined me in the management of Johnson's Department Store.
