Introduction question, search, observe, discuss, ask, listen, participate, read, analyze, innovate, write, voice, disseminate, apply, rinse, and repeat. I am an academic geek, yes I am. I feel like I should write a little song about it, but alas, I have not those skills. As a graduate student, I focus on my academic interests (which are also my personal interests) include consumerism, voluntary simplicity, and/or people who choose to reduce the amount of "stuff" that they consume, ethical consumption, social change, and personal agency. As a Research Associate, I get a lot of personal satisfaction working on multiple research grants which focus on reporting information about the quality of health care directly to patients/consumers, including ratings of doctors, nurses, hospitals, nursing homes, and hospices. Usually this is done through websites (such as Hospital Compare or Nursing Home Compare). I conduct focus groups with the public to get their opinions of health care quality. I also help develop and test the language and graphics used on public websites to make sure they are understandable and interesting to the public.
