About me

Introduction My interest in Byzantine iconography began out of an interest in Mexican oil paintings on tin of saints, called retablos. A friend who was also an avid retablo collector, suggested I take a course in icon painting. I did as a way to understand the religious meanings of icons. I have come to love the process of icon writing (the preferred description) in egg tempera, using all natural pigments and materials. My most recent subject for icon-writing is St. Mark at his desk. I plan to begin an image of the Theotokos, known as the God-Bearer, and is an image of the Virgin and Child, for one of my granddaughters who is getting married next April. I need plenty of time, so the icon can rest after writing (painting)the icon before the final process of oiling.
Interests Byzantine iconography, Mexican Santos, New Mexican religious art, piano, Thomas Merton
Favorite Movies Babette's Feast, The Gospel According to Saint Matthew(Pasolini), The Last Temptation of Christ (Scorsese), At Play in the Fields of the Lord

Favorite Books The writings of Thomas Merton or books about him, although, I enjoy a wide variety of reading. Some by Merton you might want to read: THE SEVEN STORY MOUNTAIN, NEW SEEDS OF CONTEMPLATION, NO MAN IS AN ISLAND. Books about him include Michael Mott's THE SEVEN MOUNTAINS OF THOMAS MERTON or the recent book by James Harford MERTON AND FRIENDS A Joint Biogrphy of Thomas Merton, Robert Lax, and Edward Rice. A good starter book for learning about icons is Icons and Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
