Introduction I started birding in the mid 1970s, my local haunts being Wraysbury GPs and Staines reservoirs amongst others. After a gap from around 1980 to roughly 2000 I slowly returned to birding, but it had certainly changed since the 1970s ! I reckon 2007 was the turning point, when I finally became an active birder. It was autumn 2007 when I started doing survey work, initially for the 2007-11 combined winter and breeding BTO bird atlas, and later with other BTO and SOS surveys. A trip to Mull in 2010 with seven other Sussex birders was a high point of the Atlas project, whilst catching up with my old friend & birding companion John in Shetland the year before was fantastic. Most of my birding though is carried out locally in Sussex, and around Brighton in particular. I have been birding Sheepcote valley on the eastern edge of the city for about the last ten years.
