| Introduction | I grew up on a farm, where fresh and healthy food was something I took for granted. My education on food access began with a year working in eastern Montana in food desert communities and on a Native American Reservation building infrastructure and enthusiasm for fresh and healthy foods where there was little access or knowledge. I then spent a year in eastern Oregon working in a small rural school with lots of energy for its Farm to School program. There I managed a school garden and taught nutrition and cooking to elementary students. Feeling like I was well-versed in the challenges of food access and health in rural locations, in 2013 I moved to Portland where I pursued experience in urban food justice. I now work as the SUN Food Pantry Assistant Coordinator for Metropolitan Family Service, where I facilitate the running of three food pantries in Portland schools. I use this blog to explore and discuss the challenges and triumphs of trying to promote a healthier and more just way of eating. |
