| Introduction | Starting over is never easy, but doing it with no ID, no money, and nowhere to call home is a different challenge altogether. In March 2025, I arrived in Ottawa after years away, carrying little more than a suitcase and the weight of an uncertain future. My ID had expired in prison, leaving me locked out of essential services. I had no phone, no transportation, and no clear path forward. Thankfully, a support agency had helped me secure a shelter bed—my first step toward rebuilding. Walking into that shelter was a culture shock, but it was also a turning point. This blog, Down But Not Out, is about the struggle to reclaim my life after incarceration and homelessness. It’s about resilience, survival, and the long road to a second chance. |
