Introduction Grant Burke spent most of his 20’s listening to music and riding, racing, working on and selling bicycles. About five years ago, sensing an impasse with his work and life, and with the encouragement of his husband, he went back to school. After starting at the University of Ottawa, Grant transferred to the University of Maryland College Park, where he received a B.A with honors in History. While there he was lucky enough to attend classes in urban history taught by David M.P. Freund, author of Colored Property : State Policy and White Racial Politics in Suburban America , and became hooked on urban history. Subsequently, his master’s thesis, which he is currently in his second year of, is attempting to construct a social history of Ottawa’s Queer community, with a particular emphasis on the spaces and places that the community has used over time; how these spaces reflected on the values of the community; its relationship with Ottawa and society writ large; and how both have changed over time.
