| Introduction | A couple of years ago, I was hit by a car, tossed ten feet into the air and landed on my head. I was marked down as dead by a cop named Jimmy Stewart who was too busy to pay attention as they carried me off to the hospital. I walked away without a scratch. Ever since then life has been been getting better but there is a long way to go. I teach a decent and diverse lot of blue collar kids. I'm working on a second master's at Harvard's night school. I talk to myself in my head. I say, "What's stopping you? What's stopping you from doing that? What's stopping you from saying that? Give it a try. You might like it." When I haven't said these things for a while I notice I'm in an awful doldrum. I usually say these things ten times a day if I'm traveling. |
