Introduction Susie Andretta is a senior lecturer at London Metropolitan University. Her publication profile includes a book on Information literacy: a practitioner’s guide (2005) which promotes this practice as a foundation of independent and lifelong learning, and explores its empowering effect on the facilitator and the learner. In January 2006 she edited a special issue on information literacy commissioned by Italics, the online journal of the Higher Education Academy–Information and Computer Sciences, entitled Information literacy: challenges of implementation. This looks at the problems of integrating information literacy within the education sector as a whole. She has also edited a book on Change and challenge: Information literacy for the 21st Century which covers the implementation of information literacy education from a range of UK-based and international perspectives. Additional research interests include the impact of visual information literacy on the process of knowledge construction, the role of information literacy in the UK’s Key Skills initiative and the need to fully embed information literacy within the e-learning agenda.
