Introduction After I was medically retired from the US Army Nurse Corps, nothing moved me. Until I read "Asphalt Renaissance," a book about the work of Kurt Wenner. I felt I HAD TO DO this. I began close to home, in familiar areas. I have been checking out pavement and rules attached to it around San Antonio like my life depends on it. Im no Kurt Wenner, no El Greco. But when Im down on the ground, chalking away- I feel alive. I feel complete. Street art is an ancient tradition, a way of paying respects, and connecting with others. In England, chalk painters are called "screevers." This may or may not be from the Italian "escrivere." It's dirty, dirty, work. It's temporary. At times, it's painful. And I love it.
